Mining
Gold mining in Benin is not new. It dates to the pre-colonial period when alluvial gold was mined along rivers for the king. Most of the gold traded in the Trans-Saharan trade came from rivers in what is now Benin and Ghana.
Several surveys have been conducted in the past to establish the presence of gold in the country but limited commercial mining has been started. This leaves a huge potential to be explored by gold miners in the country.Lying in the same geographical location with some of Africa’s to gold producers such as Ghana and Mali points to the fact that the country has great potential as a gold producer.
The government has awarded a number exploration licenses to international gold mining companies for gold exploration in the country in recent years.
Most of these companies have recorded positive initial results that suggest that the country could have far more gold resources to be explored. Significant amount of gold mineralization has been discovered in both the Alibori and Atacora regions. Alluvial sentiments containing gold have also been found in several places outside of these regions indicating potentially widespread deposits.
Uni Group through Uni-Mining has secured a large-scale exploration license in Benin and is working with leading teams of geologists to determine commercial viability of the gold resources under its license and anticipates moving to a mining exploitation license in due course with the commencement of commercial production.
The company is engaged with leading Chinese equipment companies and operators and is in a strong position to leverage emerging opportunities in greenfield and brownfield gold operations across west Africa
